Challenge

The Black Fives Foundation, dedicated to preserving and honoring the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball, sought to revitalize its brand identity to better reflect its mission and historical significance. The goal was to develop a modern, cohesive brand that honored the pioneers of basketball while connecting with contemporary audiences.

idea

As the lead designer, I spearheaded the overhaul of the foundation’s brand guidelines. This included creating new logo designs with variations, comparing them to previous styles to ensure evolution without losing heritage. I developed updated color palettes, social media icons, refined photo treatments, and illustrations that aligned with the foundation’s storytelling. The visual framework was designed to establish a strong, impactful, and versatile identity that resonated across digital and print platforms.

Impact

The refreshed brand identity strengthened the Black Fives Foundation’s ability to communicate its mission and legacy. The updated guidelines provided a robust visual foundation for campaigns, increasing engagement and awareness around the history of African Americans in basketball. This rebranding effort further cemented the foundation’s role as a steward of basketball’s rich heritage.
